If that sounds hard, don’t worry, there is a simple formula that the Apostle Paul gave us that we can apply to help us get ready and be ready.

Ephesians 6:10-17 describes a routine of putting on God’s armour so that we can be ready to face the schemes of the devil. Paul knew that all of us would encounter the enemy at some time or other in life and that when that evil day comes, we would need to stand unwavering.

But why is it so important to be ready? Why can’t I just cross the bridge when I get to it, or fly by the seat of my pants?

When we make decisions as we go along, we don’t have the advantage that we would have had if we had time to prepare. We have to use the information provided in the moment – there is no room for flexibility or time to check facts, compare strategies and to top it all, the stress and anxiety are very real.

To some, this may be a thrilling ride, but imagine if you had a do-over and this time you were well-prepared. How different would our result be? Preparation has heaps of benefits and just being ready really boosts your overall confidence. We are grounded and focused and it’s harder to pull the wool over our eyes. We deal with problems more efficiently and we easily anticipate the outcome.

RELATED: Extra Oil: 8 Ways the Holy Spirit Helps You

King David understood this all too well. He was prepared to face Goliath and he defeated him (1 Samuel 17).

What do I do to be ready?

We have tested armour and we need to put it on so that we get used to it long before the day arrives. The first five pieces are defensive, but the last one, the Sword of the Spirit, is offensive – it’s designed to attack.

1. Belt of Truth buckled around your waist

Jesus is the truth (John 14:6). All truth starts with him. The belt helps us to distinguish between what truth is and what it isn’t. Jesus said we will know the truth and the truth will set us free (John 8:32).

2. Breastplate of Righteousness in place

We protect ourselves with the righteousness of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Interestingly, it’s a breastplate because we are told in Proverbs 4:23 to protect and guard our hearts above all else. We are righteous when we are in a right relationship with God.

3. Your Feet are fitted with the Readiness that comes from the Gospel of Peace

Our feet represent our walk with God, and the gospel of peace is the good news that the death and resurrection of Jesus brought us. Through His sacrifice, salvation came to us. When we stand firm in this revelation, we walk unhindered.

4. Shield of Faith to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one

Faith (gk. pistis) is trust, confidence, assurance and belief in God. Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). We put our hope and trust in Him, knowing He will perfect our faith. God is also a shield around us, protecting us from danger (Psalm 3:3). We use faith as a shield to fend off all sorts of attacks, including doubt, low self-esteem and quitting.

5. The Helmet of Salvation

The helmet protects our heads in battle (Psalm 140:7). Daily, we are facing a war against our minds. Our enemy understands that to win the war, he just needs to get us to believe we have already been conquered. We have to guard against negative thoughts by practising self-control (1 Thessalonians 5:8) and placing ourselves under Christ’s headship. We essentially put on the mind of Christ.

6. Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God

The Sword is an offensive weapon and it serves as a warning to the enemy. Paul likened the sword to God’s Word. It is like a two-edged or double-edged sword and it cuts through truth and falsehood. It is a discerner. The Greek word distomos consists of ‘di‘, which means two and ‘stomo’, the word mouth. So put together, it means a two-mouthed sword.

Activation of God’s Word in our lives comes through speaking. We start by reading and spending time in God’s word and when a situation arises, the Holy Spirit drops a quickened word (gk. rhema) from the recesses of your heart. That word then begins to become a revelation to you and you then speak it. That is what a two-mouthed sword is all about. First, God speaks– written or rhema word and then you speak the word.

Hebrews 4:12 says the word of God is quick, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

10 Bible Scriptures to Be Ready for Any Season

Proverbs 22:3, NLT

A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions.
