That means the early years are critical for laying a spiritual foundation. If we wait until they’re older, we may have missed the window when their hearts and minds are most open to the truth.

The Bible doesn’t say “wait until it’s convenient” — it says train up a child. This is a call to active, ongoing discipleship in the home. And while the church plays a valuable supporting role, the greatest responsibility lies with parents and, yes, even grandparents.

Train Up by Living It Out Daily

Children don’t just need to be told what to believe — they need to see it. Your example speaks louder than any lesson. If we want to train up our children in the ways of God, it begins with us walking authentically with Him.

They notice when you:

Keep your word

Apologise when you’re wrong

Worship through trials

Spend time with God even when no one is watching

Don’t underestimate the power of your daily choices. Children are watching — and learning — whether you realise it or not. They’ll be drawn to a real, living faith far more than a rehearsed one.

This is exactly what God commanded parents to do in Deuteronomy 6:7:
“Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night.” (MSG)

God’s design was always for parents to live and breathe His Word in everyday life — not just in church, but around the dinner table, during car rides, while walking the dog or tucking kids into bed. Scripture was never meant to be compartmentalised; it was meant to shape how we live, love and lead our homes.

Creative Ways to Train Up Children in the Word

Training up your child in God’s Word doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to be consistent, engaging and rooted in a relationship. Here are some creative, practical ways to start:

1. Weekly Family Scripture Sharing

Even if life is busy, aim for one night a week where each family member shares a verse God highlighted for them during the week. Discuss it together. This builds a habit of listening to God and valuing His Word.

2. Let Children Pray at Mealtimes

Allow each child to pray for the meal. It teaches confidence in speaking to God and reminds them that their voice matters to Him. Rotate so everyone gets a chance.

3. Make the Bible Come Alive

Act out Bible stories, build scenes with Lego or create artwork inspired by verses. Kids remember what they experience, not just what they hear.

4. Scripture Memory Games

Use flashcards, music or call-and-response to help kids memorise scripture. Make it fun and light-hearted. Reward them with praise or a small treat.

5. Worship Together as a Family

Sing worship songs in the car or while cleaning. Create a home culture where worship is normal and natural.

Grandparents Can Help Train Up the Next Generation

If you’re a grandparent, you have a beautiful and vital role to play. Share stories of how God has been faithful. Pray with your grandchildren. Be present and intentional. Your life is a testimony that strengthens their faith.

Don’t assume your influence has passed — you’re still shaping hearts and leaving a legacy of faith.

You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to Train Up Your Child

Here’s the good news: God isn’t looking for perfect parents — He’s looking for present ones. Start where you are. Don’t wait for the “ideal” moment. If all you can do is one intentional conversation a week, do that with your whole heart.

The goal is not religious activity but relationship. Children need to know that God is real, that He speaks and that He cares. They need to see that you believe that too.

Final Encouragement

To train up a child is to walk with them toward Jesus, not once, but day after day. Through your words, your example and your faith, you are building a foundation that will last.

So breathe. You’re not doing this alone. The Holy Spirit is your helper. Jesus is your guide. And God has entrusted you with this precious assignment — not because you’re perfect, but because He’s with you.

“The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or material things, but a legacy of character and faith.” — Billy Graham

Let’s rise to the call.
